Summary: We found most of these meals to be disappointing, but we do respect the effort they made to produce meals on a Medicaid budget.
Prepared Meal, Diet Delivery Services, Gourmet Food, and Premium Steak Companies We Have Tried
HomeStyle Direct is prepared meal delivery service that is qualified for Medicaid and other agency programs, but they also have a Private Pay program for shipping nationwide. To qualify for these services, their meal prices have to be low, and they are. Ours cost $6 each.
Bacon and Cheese Omelet with Hash Browns and a Bagel
This was the best meal we had from HomeStyle Direct. It is good breakfast, but needs seasoning. It may be without salt to cater to senior health issues.
Beef Tamale with Mexican Rice and Chuck Wagon Vegetables
Very good meal for the price. Lots of corn (starchy) and some green vegetables instead of so much corn would be healthier for seniors, but a good meal.
Chicken Ala King
Not a traditional Chicken A La King, but very good for this price range. Seasoning seems to be a repeat issue with these meals, but that easy enough to fix if you are not a low sodium diet.
This is another good meal for the price. "For the price" is key because it wouldn't score as high on a regular menu. Some green vegetables would make the meal healthier.
A good lasagna but a very small portion, which for some reason seems to be common for this dish with meal delivery services. Love the green vegetables, although they are cheap broccoli stems.
Beef Shepherd's Pie
This is not as good as the ones that appear on other prepared meal delivery menus, and it doesn't come with any mashed potatoes. For the price it is fair, but not much better than that.
While we wouldn't say that these meals are good enough for the consumer who wants the convenience of prepared meals delivered to their home, we would say they are better than other Medicaid delivery services. If you are looking for a solution to feed a senior family member, this might be an option.
Overall, the meal quality was fair, but in the "Medicaid" world of prepared meals, fair is actually well above average. The other companies we tested that also do this care very little about what the person who will eventually eat their food.
HomeStyle Direct does care and you can see and taste it in the quality of their food, with the very limited budget they have to work with.
